Workplace rehabilitation

Returning to work is an integral part of the rehabilitation process for all insurance clients. In particular, HandsOn specialises in liaising with WorkCover Queensland ( www.workcoverqld.com.au ) to facilitate return to work programs for their clients. Return to work programs aim to support and enhance function within tasks of daily living.

There are 3 facets to return to work programs
  • Functional Capacity Screening/Evaluation This will determine the injured worker's capabilities of strength, movement, lifting, and other parameters related to the injury and the work tasks required. This evaluation is conducted at our clinic prior to the work site visit.
  • Work Site Visit/Evaluation As the name suggests, a qualified and experienced occupational therapist attends the workplace, with the injured worker and relevant personnel from the workplace including the rehabilitation co-ordinator, supervisor, manager. A meeting is held and all parties discuss and review appropriate duties. From this meeting and a review of the workplace/tasks, the therapist will develop a suitable duties program.
  • Suitable Duties Program The suitable duties program formally outlines the duties, restrictions, hours and days that the injured worker can work for each week of the programme. These programs are monitored regularly and upgraded as possible.
If the injured worker does not have a suitable job to which to return, there are several options which may be pursued with the insurer. For example, Host Employment may be considered and facilitated by HandsOn.

To further facilitate upgrade of duties a work hardening programme to develop general physical condition, strength and endurance can be individually prescribed by HandsOn exercise physiologists.

In addition to this comprehensive approach to worker rehabilitation, HandsOn also provides specialised occupational services to support workplace injury risk management programmes. Services include: pre-employment checks and ergonomic work station assessments.

Pre-employment checks are a tool for new employers to objectively assess physical function including strength, movement, dexterity and lifting ability. All information is provided to the employer with objective (normative) interpretation. These parameters can then be compared to the physical demands of the job to assist with injury risk management.

An onsite work station assesment provides recommendations regarding posture, equipment and work pacing.
