Splinting and casting

Low temperature thermoplastic splints are commonly fabricated after surgery to protect repaired structures and allow certain movement only. Hand therapists are skilled in the construction of custom made splints for surgical clients following procedures such as joint replacements, ligament reconstruction and tendon repairs.

Low temperature thermoplastic splints or soft splints are also used to enhance function in painful degenerative joint conditions or chronic joint instability. Hand therapists are able to assess and prescribe soft braces for such conditions, including supports made from neoprene and leather.
