Oedema and Lymphoedema Management
HandsOn therapists routinely manage swelling as part of acute and post surgical intervention.However, specialised care of more chronic swelling conditions is often required and HandsOn therapists have post graduate training and are therefore qualified to manage the following conditions of the upper and lower limb :
- Lymphoedema
- Venous oedema
- Dependency oedema
- Lipoedema
Management of such conditions involves a range of treatments, specifically tailored to the individual, including :
- Manual Lymphatic Massage, to stimulate lymphatic flow and remove excessive fluid from the tissues
- Multi-layer bandaging to assist in the reduction of swelling and correction of limb shape
- Measuring and fitting of off-the-shelf and custom fit compression garments
- Provision of individually tailored home exercise programs to enhance the effects of treatment
- Advice regarding ongoing maintenance and care of chronic conditions
