Exercise Physiology
An exercise physiologist is a university trained health professional who specialises in the field of either health and fitness or exercise rehabilitation. An AAESS (Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science) accredited exercise physiologist has had both the university training and extensive workplace experience.
HandsOn has an AAESS accredited exercise physiologist as part of their health team. The exercise physiologist typically uses their advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology to prescribe functional activities in a variety of settings (fitness centre, home or workplace based), to plan, progress and monitor these activities to improve the clients quality of life, functional performance and physical capacity and implement these programmes at an appropriate level for each individual.
The focus of exercise physiologists at HandsOn is to provide treatment in the form of individualised exercise programmes. Programmes are specifically tailored to marry with the clients injury and physical conditioning needs. Generally, improvements in physical capacity are required to improve task performance in the workplace to facilitate upgrade to normal duties. The exercise physiologist liaises closely with the treating medical officer and treating therapists to ensure that prescribed programmes are condition specific and complementary to other intervention.
Programmes designed by exercise physiologists at HandsOn can be targeted to improve any of the following :
- General fitness and physical conditioning
- Core and bilateral shoulder girdle strengthening
- Increased upper limb and lower limb tone and strength
