Education

Due to expertise in the area of hand and upper limb management, HandsOn staff are involved in a regular programme of professional education forums.

Undergraduates are regularly welcomed at HandsOn as part of the University of Queensland clinical placement program for occupational therapy students. In addition, post graduates are welcome to ‘workshadow' at HandsOn. Workshadowing offers a unique opportunity to upgrade both knowledge and skills related to hand therapy, in a clinical setting with qualified hand therapists. This can be undertaken on as informal mentoring program.

As part of our regular calendar of formal education programs, three exciting workshops are planned for the second half of 2008. Details of all programs, together with registration information, are provided below.
  • ARTHRITIS WORKSHOP
    Saturday, 13th September

    Barbara Watson, HandsOn Clinical Director, is the presenter at this one day forum. Barbara, Queensland's most experienced therapist in the management of rheumatological conditions, has designed an innovative programme for post graduates which will provide an overview of the assessment and medical and post-surgical rehabilitation for arthritic conditions. Splinting demonstrations and practise is also included in the workshop.

  • OPTIONS FOR POST TRAUMATIC STIFFNESS
    Saturday, 11 th October

    This half day workshop will be co-presented by Megan Gandfors, HandsOn Senior Clinician and Barbara Watson, Clinical Director. The pathomechanics of stiffness will be highlighted, followed by therapy intervention options. A splinting practicum will conclude the workshop.

  • OPTIONS FOR POST TRAUMATIC OEDEMA
    Saturday, 15 th November

    Angela Thynne and Megan Gandfors, Lymphoedema Trained Occupational Therapists, are the presenters at this half day forum. The programme will address issues related to persistent low level oedema as a consequence of trauma and surgery. A range of management options will be explored.
