Education

Due to expertise in the area of hand and upper limb management, HandsOn staff are involved in a regular programme of professional education forums.

Undergraduates are regularly welcomed at HandsOn as part of the University of Queensland clinical placement program for occupational therapy students. In addition, post graduates are welcome to ‘workshadow' at HandsOn. Workshadowing offers a unique opportunity to upgrade both knowledge and skills related to hand therapy, in a clinical setting with qualified hand therapists. This can be undertaken on as informal mentoring program.

As part of our regular calendar of formal education programs, three exciting workshops are planned for 2010. All workshops are part of OT Australia (Qld) Professional Development Programme and details of all programmes, together with registration information is available through the association. • MANAGEMENT OF COMMON HAND PROBLEMS
    April 2010

This workshop will be jointly presented by Barbara Watson, HandsOn Clinical Director and Megan Gandfors, Hand Therapist. The workshop will address the most common hand conditions presenting to an occupational therapy department and will present management guidelines for a range of soft tissue and skeletal conditions. Splints, as part of the management programme, will be demonstrated and all participants will have the opportunity to practise construction of the demonstrated splints.

  • SPLINTING : A PRACTICAL WORKSHOP FOR CONSTRUCTION OF STATIC SPLINTS
    June 2010

This workshop will be presented by Megan Gandfors, who has over 25 years experience in teaching splinting and casting techniques in Australia and internationally. Participants will learn how to choose thermoplastics for the clinical job at hand, how to handle the thermoplastics and how to use the materials to make the most commonly constructed hand and upper limb splints. Participants will make a range of splints under guidance and the clinical use of these splints will be discussed.

  • MANAGEMENT OF RHEUMATOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
    September 2010

This one day forum is being presented by Barbara Watson. Barbara is Queensland's most experienced therapist in the management of arthritis and associated conditions. This innovative programme for post graduates will provide an overview of the assessment and medical and post-surgical rehabilitation for arthritic conditions. Splinting demonstrations and practicuums are also included in the workshop.
