Driver assessment and rehabilitationAustRoads ( www.austroads.com.au ) provide comprehensive guidelines regarding medical conditions which require assessment for driving.In Queensland , licence holders are legally required to notify Queensland Transport if they develop a medical condition or have a change to a pre-existing condition which is likely to affect their ability to drive safely. A person's licence may be amended in accordance with a medical certificate. More information on medical conditions reporting requirements can be found at www.transport.qld.gov.au/licensing If you have a medical condition which may affect your ability to drive safely, your doctor may ask that you have a driver assessment so that he or she can determine your medical fitness to drive. A driver assessment can only be conducted by an occupational therapist with the appropriate post graduate qualification. HandsOn have a team of Driver Assessors available to assess fitness to drive for all the conditions listed on the Queensland Transport website, with specialised experience in the following areas
The driver assessments conducted at HandsOn comply with Competency Standards for Occupational Therapy Driver Assessors – OT Australia – Victoria 1998. A driver assessment consists of two components – an off-road assessment and an on-road assessment. The off-road assessment consists of a thorough screen of the physical and cognitive skills required for driving. This component takes approximately 11/2 hours. The on-road assessment is conducted in a dual control car with the Driver Assessor and a driving instructor. It is conducted over a pre-determined route consisting of various traffic conditions and takes approximately one hour. Following the above assessments, a comprehensive report is provided.
